It is safe to say that most of us on this side of the aisle believe that John McCain's 'suspension' of his campaign is a cheap political stunt meant to shake up the campaign narrative and arrest Barack Obama's momentum. Even as I write this, House Republicans are throwing up roadblocks to the already announced deal, perhaps to give McCain an opportunity to Save the Day.
Assume for a moment that McCain is truly putting Country First . Conventional wisdom is that it will take a couple of weeks to see how McCain's actions play out. That is, will momentum swing back to the warrior-hero who swept in and saved the country or will the public react negatively to a political stunt as more sober heads huddled to find a solution?
There is only one way McCain can assure us that he was not playing politics here. After this saga plays out and he returns to the campaign trail, he should never speak of it again. Ever. His actions should speak loudly enough. If he or his surrogates point to this 'suspension' as proof that he loves his country more than winning an election, they are turning his actions into a political machination. Pretty simple in my mind. If McCain did indeed put Country First, he and his campaign and surrogates will exhibit the humility of true patriots and refuse to score political points from his selfless act.
